FWIW, I've been poking a few different things into OEM recently, and one
route (which has various advantages e.g. handling network outages
somewhat) is using the emonhub software.  I recently patched it to offer
a generic "execute unix command, and parse the output".

It would be reasonably easy to get it to receive other data (e.g. from a
UNIX domain socket or whatever) I think.
